Aug. 9. We planned a party for our 50th
reunion - and what a party it turned out to be ! My thanks to all the
classmates who helped on the planning and preparations for the reunion, to all
the classmates who sent in their biography sheets for the reunion annual, and to
all the classmates who were able to join in this celebration. Those of you
who attended for the first time gave special meaning to the term 'Reunion' - and
we were so glad that you were able to join us.
Many of you also have requested Bill Koons' dinner address - after Bill and Linda get back to Philadelphia, he will be sending a copy to me that I will post. Wasn't it a fantastic job that he did ? I'm having trouble getting Bill's text transferred to the website, but I can e-mail it. Just send me a request, and I'll shoot it right off to you.
Eureka! I finally figured it out - his talk is posted as the first item on the Pictures page - click on the first thumbnail and increase magnification to 400%.
In a day or so I will be posting a more complete report on the reunion. Right now I want to revel in the memories (and catch up on my sleep), but I am putting together notes for the report. Also, we have about 6 copies of Sharon Moore's compilation of creative writing from Dr. Kehl's class. She has donated them to our class. If you would like a copy, I would recommend a donation to our class treasury. Request via e-mail to Martha.

Medical updates:
Classmate Reva Morefield Moen had some medical difficulties Saturday night/Sunday morning with her COPD. She left the Hilton in style in an ambulance Sunday morning, but she was home before dinnertime. She wanted everyone to know that she was doing much better and appreciates your concern.
Classmate Nancy Gaskill Elliott, wife of classmate Dave Elliott, has been undergoing cancer treatment in Portland. She and Dave had planned to attend activities for both North Eugene and South Eugene, but she just did not feel up to it.
Classmate Karen Myrmo Coleman will be having surgery on Thursday, August 12, as she noted on her bio page in the reunion annual. Dave will let me know on Friday how things went and are going, and I will post the information here for everyone to read. He has asked that folks not call him at work or at home for updates - he would prefer to have it posted here. Let's honor his request and give both Karen and Dave some respite from a ringing telephone until things settle down for them.
Aug. 13.
Karen's surgery yesterday went well. All test results are benign. Karen is
recuperating in the hospital and will not be home until sometime next week, so
Dave and Marcia will continue to call me to post updates here. Please
respect his request not to call him until he has it posted here.
Aug. 18.
Karen is at home and doing well, although it will be a slow process until she is
charging around in her usual fashion. Dave asked that we hold off on phone
calls - cards and notes would be appreciated, however. He said that the
robotic surgery was amazing - no need to open Karen's chest up and break ribs to
get to the tumor site to remove it. Karen, our thoughts and prayers are
with you for your speedy recovery.
Sept. 6.
Karen is at home and, to quote her, "is doing as well as can be expected.
I'm tired, but looking forward to getting back into the swing of things after my
doctors' appointments on Sept. 16th." Probably best to hold off on the
phone calls for a while longer - she has to get up and stand to use the phone on
her kitchen counter. I'm sure she'd like notes and cards to cheer her
days.

Aug. 11.
Richard Raines Video Productions from Portland had a videographer at both our
Friday reception and our Saturday dinner. He interviewed as many of our
classmates as he could catch up with - and Richard will edit the results into a
90 minute DVD which classmates may order for $29.95 if they wish. Letters
with ordering information were sent out today by the Reunion Committee (we sent
them ourselves; we did not release the Class Roster to Richard). There is
no pressure to order the DVD; it is totally a personal decision. When I
see it, I'll let everyone know my reaction.

Royd Faust, North Eugene Class of 1960, donated two items for a special raffle - a purple jacket embroidered SEHS Class of 60, and a purple sweatshirt with the same embroidery. Those of you who had been envying Bob Carmichael for possessing such a jacket had the chance to try to win one ! Tickets for the raffle were sold at our class check-in table in the Hilton lobby - $1 each, or 6 for $5. Proceeds will be donated as part of our contribution to the EHS/SEHS Alumni Scholarship Fund. The drawings were held at our Saturday banquet. Lucky winners were . . . . . Bill Guske, winner of the sweatshirt, and Bill Ruff, winner of the jacket. Congratulations to both Bills ! ! !

The EHS/SEHS Alumni Scholarship Fund was created by the Class of 1954 at their 50th reunion in honor of the excellent education received at Eugene High School. As each successive class has reached its 50 year milestone, each has been invited to join in this effort to fund scholarships for the current students at South Eugene High School. This past spring, the Class of 2010 was awarded two $1000 scholarships and three $500 scholarships. These scholarships are based on academics, extracurricular activities and need, and are fully funded by alumni contributions. Contributions are tax deductible, made payable to "EHS/SEHS Alumni Scholarship Fund" with Class of 1960 on the memo line, and are to be sent to South Eugene High School, 400 E. 19th Avenue, Eugene, OR 97405 Attn: Finance Clerk.
Donations from classmates and sale of raffle tickets totalled $378, which was sent to SEHS as our initial contribution to the Alumni Scholarship Fund from the Class of 1960.
We hope that our classmates will join in perpetuating this scholarship fund for SEHS.

Denny's Restaurants will be giving away FREE Grand Slam breakfasts on everyone's birthday for the entire year of 2010. You must present a picture ID to receive your breakfast. Thank you, Denny's!

September's First Tuesday was a cheerful gathering, albeit somewhat damp around the edges from the rain ! We caught up on the memories of our reunion, and Donna Kernutt reported on the success of the Willamette High School 50th reunion for which she was the chairman. Classmates and spouses/significant others at Izzy's were Charlie and Sharon Merrill, Judy Clark and her granddaughter, Lanny Martin, Bill Ruff, Ray and Sharon Todd Hanke, Donna Knapp, Martha Hendrickson, Bry Engle, Gary and Donna Kernutt, Wally and Geri Van Devender Wacker, Donna Fitch and Jerry Holte, Pat Clarke, Gary Olson, Dale Nygren, Nini Mitchell, Lon and Juanita Morgan Bunce and Bill Jones.
First Tuesday in October will be celebrated on October 5. Mark your calendars now and plan to join us at Izzy's on Seneca Road off West 11th, at the north end of the Fred Meyer parking lot. "Starting" time is anywhere between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.; the restaurant closes at 9 p.m. We don't have to be the last ones to leave, but some of us often are the last! Our gatherings are casual - come when you can, stay as long as you want, and plan to come back again the next month.
We do hope that other local classmates will join us for our gatherings, and whenever travelers are in the area that they will be there, too.

GO DUCKS!!! GO BEAVERS!!!
The Pac-10 is now a 12-team league with the addition of the University of Colorado and the University of Utah. This change will take effect in the fall of 2012. We'll have to wait and see how the league gets divided.
The Ducks stomped all over New Mexico in the opening football game, 72-0. Ouch. The coming weekend is a more rigorous test against Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, with almost 100,000 rabid fans in orange and with "Rocky Top" blaring forth all over the place.
The Beavers didn't fare as well, as TCU did them in down in Texas. A few miscues derailed the OSU efforts. At least they have a bye weekend now to lick their wounds and re-group.

CLASSMATES LOST SINCE THE 2010 REUNION

Classmate Sharon Berg Johnson lost her mother, Florence Farmer, on August 17, 2010, to age-related causes. She was 93 years old.

On the first Tuesday of EVERY MONTH we get together for dinner, conversation, and catching up with each other. We are often joined by a number of old friends from out-of-town (check out the news section above for details)!
If you are planning a trip to Eugene, try to make it to a First Tuesday. Let me know in advance that you plan to attend, and I will post your name and let your friends know!
